As hospital marketers, we spend a lot of time in our own bubble, talking about how our teams are experiencing AI. But are we paying enough attention to how patients, caregivers and physicians are experiencing it?

Maybe we should.

At our AI Think Tank (right after #HCIC26 concludes, Oct. 28 from 12:45 to 5 p.m.), David McDonald, CEO and founder of LIFT Healthcare, and Camille Strickland, senior vice president of BVK, are doing a presentation about findings from their ongoing national mixed-methods research program, The Patient-Facing AI Study.

“We don’t see ourselves as AI experts,” McDonald says. “We study people and healthcare. And we’re interested in what happens when AI begins showing up in the healthcare experience from the perspective of the people living through it.”

Wave One of the research included patients, caregivers, physicians and healthcare executives, using both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. One area the research explores is how different groups across healthcare think about readiness for patient-facing AI.

The research also explores how patients are incorporating AI into their healthcare lives and what that may mean for trust, transparency and the relationship between patients and their care teams.

"We went into this with a lot of questions,” Strickland says. “What we’re finding is that some of the most interesting things aren’t necessarily the answers. They’re the tensions in the research, and the new questions those tensions are causing us to ask.”

During the presentation, McDonald and Strickland will explore what the research means for trust, transparency, organizational readiness and the evolving relationship between patients and their care teams. Attendees will also have an opportunity to react to the findings and leave with a set of patient-facing AI-related questions to explore with their own leadership teams.

“This isn’t going to be a presentation where Camille and I read survey results off slides,” McDonald says. “We want to share some of what we’re seeing, explore what it may mean and then have a conversation with the people in the room.”
