Digital marketers need many skills to succeed. But technical skills, while important, are just part of the package. Soft skills, which are more subjective, are also necessary.
What types of soft skills are important for digital marketers? Here are six soft skills to round out a complete toolkit:
- Curiosity. Without curiosity, a person will be satisfied with only doing the bare minimum. A curious person is always looking for ways to go above and beyond. Asking questions and being willing to learn can help digital marketers find a way to exceed expectations.
- Communication skills. Marketing is all about communicating, so this may sound like a “duh.” But some important aspects of communication skills are particularly important, such as consistency, being clear and direct and being helpful and constructive.
- Adaptability. If COVID-19 taught us anything, it was the importance of adaptability and being flexible. The rapidly changing face of the early pandemic required the ability to adapt marketing strategies quickly to meet changing information. On a more global level, changes such as Google’s Core Web Vitals, privacy regulations and more require the ability to be flexible with strategies.
- Multitasking. Another “duh.” What profession doesn’t require multitasking? The ability to switch hats and move between various tasks is vital to maintain a smooth-running marketing operation.
- Problem-solving. Even the most carefully thought-out plans and strategies can develop hiccups. Being able to identify solutions and carry them out is crucial to a successful campaign.
- Teamwork. While this seems self-evident, not everyone is a team player. Open collaboration among team members is absolutely necessary for a marketing team to succeed.
